As we make it to spring, have you thought of takin As we make it to spring, have you thought of taking a sort of summer break? Have you ever considered a sabbatical? When it comes to freelancing, building in times for breaks for a vacation or break can be a challenge. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ If you can build space for a time gap in your freelancing contract timeline, or can afford the flexibility of not having a set return contract, why not?⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ This year I will be taking my first ever extended break for a little over 3 months to go on the longest wilderness backpacking hike of my life!🥾🏔 ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Hiking this long takes a LOT of planning and preparation. Included in this plan are maintaining professional relationships and setting a schedule for contract lineups when returning.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ For those working in a more traditional office setting, this might not always be a clear available option depending on many factors (i.e. your position, active projects, timing, etc.) Requesting unpaid leave for a type of sabbatical may confuse your supervisor at first, but there are tons of helpful resources available to help guide the conversation if it's something you want to do at some point. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Have you ever taken a work sabbatical or considering? Old fashion pen to paper, or digital organization? Old fashion pen to paper, or digital organization? With so many tools and options to create content, what tool or method have you found yourself leaning to when it comes to getting your ideas sorted and ready for your final learning product? ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Personally, I've always been a fan of checklists and drawing out the shapes for icons, illustrations, and sequences. Whether you're working on a team, or on a specific Whether you're working on a team, or on a specific project for a client, feedback and collaboration are some of the most valuable assets we have. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Our ability to work with other people is imperative for survival and success. Granted, it seems that there will always be a group project where the self-appointed team leader ends up doing most of the work, the need for collaboration is not *always* a burden. It can and, should be, seen as another way to brainstorm and work through ideas that can be used on the task at hand, and future projects. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Remember, we are human! So only a handful of people like the way their voi So only a handful of people like the way their voice sounds on a recording, right? 🗣🎙⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Do you record your own narrations or do you hire out the work to someone in your talent network? ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ After hours of recording voiceover narrations for projects, listening to the sounds of different words after repeating myself over...⁠⁠ .⁠⁠ ... and over...⁠⁠ .⁠⁠ ... and over...⁠⁠ .⁠⁠ .⁠⁠ ... .and over again, it stops sounding like it's coming from me. ⁠⁠ It stops even sounding like a word. After editing and piecing things together after a while it starts to sound okay. Take out the headphones. Give it a couple of days, and then give it a listen. Not half bad! Despite how much we test and try to find the holes and gaps in a new program or technology that we want to implement, there are times when things are missed.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ In recent months with schools and companies rapidly transitioning to conducting learning programs remotely, adapting to new tools doesn't always go smoothly. Take for example backend hacks that students have found using the dev tools panel in Google chrome browser to find the answers for quizzes being delivered onlne. ⁠Sometimes I like cooking without a recipe, but ⁠Sometimes I like cooking without a recipe, but sometimes we have to look at a thought-out plan for a multicourse dinner. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Not all plans look the same, so I customize my storyboard for each project. Will there be narration for each slide? what about illustrations? branching scenarios? do we need to track the deliverable deadlines by course section? is the designer different than the developer? ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Storyboards and templates for keeping our course content organized can be as simple as stick figures with some content notes written out, to as complicated as animation notes, image, video, and audio file names by timestamp and notes on branching next/previous paths with trigger cues. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Just like in cooking, sometimes we don't need a written recipe or course map, and other times it's helpful to know just how much we need of each ingredient as when to stop mixing or play the videos. ⁠⁠ ⁠For my storyboard template collection, send me a dm or comment below! 💌⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ #storyboarding #IDstoryboard #learningtemplate #igforlearningdesign #learningmaps #learningjourney #elearningcontent #learningdevelopment #learningexperiencedesign #elearningdevelopment #instructionaldesign #lxd #humancentereddesign #freelance #accessibledesign #idconsulting
